Answers to Frequently Asked Masonry Questions
What kinds of projects does masonry cover?
Stonemasonry, or masonry, is a construction technique that uses stones as its main material, held together with most typically mortar. The stones are cut, shaped, and arranged carefully to create a variety of structures and features. Masonry projects might range from structural reinforcement to kitchen construction or complete wall builds. Whether you dream of an indoor or outdoor fireplace or mantle, an outdoor firepit, kitchen, or chimney, or a beautiful, long-lasting patio, drive, or walkway, our masons specialize in creating lasting beauty and functionality with mortar and stone. We also do interior remodels and new construction.
What is the difference between natural stone and manufactured stone?
Natural stone is 100% percent stone, harvested from the earth, then typically cut or shaped. Nothing has been added, removed, or mixed. Sometimes, natural stone is unshaped, such as rounded river rock. Manufactured stone, or “cultured stone,” is made mostly from concrete and other stone and aggregate materials, pressed into molds then baked, dried, or hardened to create stones that mimic the look and feel of natural stones. Natural stone also comes in a nonstructural veneer-specific shape, as a thin layer of decorative stone used for feature walls and facades on buildings. It may also be cut thick for load-bearing use. Manufactured stone, being typically lighter, less dense, easier to cut and handle, and easy to affix to different walls and surfaces, tends to be easier to install. In addition, it's generally much more affordable than natural stone, which makes it a cost-effective option for some projects on a budget. Natural stone is uniquely varied in color and texture, and manufactured stone is easier to color-match for a consistent appearance. Neither natural or manufactured is inherently better — it will depend on your individual project.
How do I choose what stone to use for my masonry project?
Manufactured or natural? Smooth and rounded or textured and edged? What color? What size? Aesthetics are a key part of this decision process, but function and location are also key. Whether or not the stone will need to be stacked high, load-bearing, or heat-resistant are all important considerations. Our masonry experts can help you choose the perfect stone for your masonry project. If you are also working with a designer or architect, we are glad to be part of your collaborative team of professionals, or to match the specifications of an architectural design.
