Throwing Stones in Cottonwood Canyon
Location: Cottonwood Canyon
Goals: The homeowner has been doing upgrade after upgrade on this beautiful rustic log home. The landscaping needed to compliment the new log staircase that would sit on top of natural stone boulders. The homeowner wanted to be able to have a nice “lawn to mow” as previously their front yard was full of rocks and gravel. They also requested planting beds along the newly installed concrete walkway leading up to the walkout basement patio. Since this home was built on the side of a mountain, there were tons of varying grade changes that needed to be improved upon and landscaped… enter, retaining walls!
Approach: In order to naviage a rather steep hill towards the front of the house, retaining walls needed to be installed to ensure proper drainage during winter and provide perennial planting beds. The crew installed tiered perennial beds parallel to the concrete walkway to enhance the look of the walkway. In order to incorporate the new staircase into the landscape, large boulders were set in the ground and the staircase posts sat on the boulders. To achieve a walkway from the back of the house to the front, we added a decomposed granite pathway leading up to the stone steps up the side of the retaining wall system. To ensure proper drainage, a large drainage system was installed to carry water away from important areas. Lighting was added to enhance the appearance of the landscape at night.
